      Lake Como
A guide
Lake Como is a lake of glacial origin in Lombardy, Italy.
Lake Como has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people sin Roman times, and a very popular tourist attraction, which boast many artistic and cultural gems.
It is famous for its numerous villas and places (such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni and Villa Carlotta). Currently, many celebrities have homes on the shores of Lake Como. Lake Como is widely regarded as been one of the most beautiful lakes in Italy.
The lake is shaped much like the character “Y” and the climate is generally mild. It is known for its Mediterranean-like climate where tropical and sub-tropical plants can grow year-around. Average daily maxima ranges from about 13° C in December to 30° in July.
Rain fall is heaviest in May and lowest during the winter months.
The lake is well-known for its attractive villas. Many of them have admirable gardens which benefy from the mild climate.
There is a number of tours and excursions from Lake Como. These can be booked a couple of days in advance, from tourist information offices or commercial travel agencies. You can go to Milan, Bergano, Villagio Crespi, St. Morita and Lugano. The Lake Como ferry service is a high developed public transport system linking the dozens of small towns and villages dotted around the perimeter of the Lake.
Today there are three main services:
 • Motorship services up and down the western branch and northern end of the lake.
• Fast services that follow broadly the same route but stop less frequently and cost extra.
• Ferries that run only between the hugely popular mid-lake village. Some of these boats carry vehicles as well as passengers.
